Sekiro Isshin Not In Tower Causes And Quest Progress Solutions

24 September 2026 | 148

Players navigating through Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice often encounter a confusing road block after defeating Genichiro Ashina. Many expected Lord Isshin Ashina to appear in his tower location immediately to advance the story, only to find the room empty. Understanding the exact quest triggers and prerequisite conditions is essential to locating Isshin and progressing smoothly through the game's main storyline.

The Tengu Quest Trigger Requirement

The primary reason Lord Isshin is missing from his tower is an uncompleted side quest involving the mysterious warrior known as Tengu. Players must travel to the building near the Ashina Castle Gate battlefield where Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa was defeated. Speaking with Tengu inside this building initiates a request to hunt down assassins, locally referred to as "rats".

Completing this rat-hunting task requires eliminating the Senpou assassins located near the Ashina Castle gates. Once they are defeated, return to Tengu to claim your reward and unlock the necessary dialogue progression. Taking care of this objective updates Isshin's location state so he can move back to his designated watchtower.

Dialogue Chains with Kuro and Emma

Another common hurdle involves skipped dialogue with Divine Heir Kuro or his attending physician Emma. Before Isshin appears in his room, Kuro must ask Sekiro to speak with the old warlord to learn about the Mortal Blade. If you have not exhausted all available dialogue options with Kuro in his room, the quest state remains paused.

Visiting Emma and asking about Lord Isshin's current whereabouts often points players in the right direction. She provides crucial context when Isshin is out handling regional threats. Ensuring every conversation option is completely exhausted with both NPCs guarantees that the narrative progresses naturally.

Locating Isshin's Alternative Locations

If Isshin is not in his tower chamber, he is usually residing in his initial location near the Great Serpent shrine or the gatehouse area. Players can easily reach this spot by heading through the outskirts or fast traveling to nearby Sculptor's Idols. Checking his original resting point will often trigger the necessary conversation needed to move him forward.

Once you speak to him in his alternative location and finish his dialogue chain, he will relocate back to the tower. This relocation opens up critical dialogue pathways related to the Fountainhead Palace and the severing of immortality. Following these precise steps eliminates any progression roadblocks and keeps your campaign moving forward efficiently.
